Stoney’s. The Better Beer.
Beer is one of the oldest and most widely consumed alcoholic beverages in the world. It's a drink that brings people together and provides an escape from the daily grind. However, not all beers are created equal. One of the factors that sets Stoney’s apart from other beers today is the quality of ingredients used and our brewing process.
Beer is primarily made up of four ingredients: water, barley, hops, and yeast. While these ingredients may seem simple, the quality of each ingredient can have a significant impact on the final product. Let's take a closer look at each one.
Water:
Water is the foundation of every beer, and it makes up about 90-95% of the total volume. The quality of the water used can greatly impact the flavor, aroma, and overall character of the beer. For example, the mineral content of the water can enhance certain flavors, such as the hops in an IPA, or mute others, such as the malt in a stout. This is why many of the world's great beer-making regions, such as Munich and Burton-upon-Trent in England, are known for their high-quality water sources.
Barley:
Barley is the most important grain used in beer-making, providing the sugars that are fermented by the yeast to produce alcohol. The only sugar you will find in a Stoney’s beer comes naturally in our brewing process. At a time Stoney’s was nicknamed “The Diabetic Beer”. This nickname became popular after knowing Stoney’s does not add any extra sugars to our brew. The quality of the barley is critical to the flavor of the beer, and it's essential to select high-quality, fresh grains that have been grown under the right conditions. Different types of barley have unique characteristics that contribute to the final flavor, aroma, and body of the beer.
Hops:
Hops are the flowers of the hop plant, and they are added to the beer to provide bitterness, aroma, and flavor. Different types of hops have different characteristics, and the quality of the hops used will greatly impact the final product.
Yeast:
Yeast is the microorganism that ferments the sugars from the barley to produce alcohol. The type of yeast used will greatly impact the final product, as different yeasts produce different flavors and aromas. For example, a traditional ale yeast will produce a fruity and slightly spicy flavor, while a lager yeast will produce a clean and crisp flavor.
